Kelly Rowland’s Early Life

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 11, 1981, Kelly Rowland moved to Houston with her mother and brother at the age of eight after her mother left her abusive father. At the age of just 11, Rowland joined a girl group called Girl’s Tyme, which featured on the talent show ‘Star Search’ in 1992. This girl group also included Beyoncé Knowles and her sister Solange. When she was 14, Rowland moved in with the Knowles family. Beyoncé’s father, who was managing Girl’s Tyme, cut the group from six members to four. He also changed the name of the group to Destiny’s Child, which was inspired by a passage from the bible. The group performed together as an opening act for other artists. Although they were eventually signed by a record company, they were dropped before they could get a deal.

Starting Her Career in Destiny’s Child

Destiny’s Child was signed to Columbia Records in 1997, and they recorded their debut song, ‘Killing Time’, the same year. This song featured as the soundtrack for the film ‘Men in Black’. A year later, the group released their self-titled album. Although the group had their ups and downs, they went on to become one of the biggest music acts of the 1990s, and one of the best-selling girl groups of all-time. They released a total of five studio albums, one Christmas album, an EP, five compilation albums, and two remix albums. Altogether, they have sold 60 million records. Their third album ‘Survivor’ reached number one in the US album charts. The group also had four number-one singles in the United States.

Solo Success and Collaborations

Destiny’s Child announced that they were taking a temporary separation in 2002, stating that they wanted to spend some time focusing on their solo careers. However, the group never reformed, and they officially announced their disbandment four years later. It was during the group’s initial hiatus that Rowland released ‘Simply Deep’, her first solo album in 2002. This was particularly successful in the UK, as it reached the top spot in the album charts. It included several chart-topping singles.

When the group officially disbanded, she released her second album ‘Ms. Kelly’. Her third album, ‘Here I Am’ was released two years later, followed two years later by her most recent solo album ‘Talk a Good Game’. In addition to the four studio albums, Rowland has also released two compilation albums, a box set, three extended plays, and 48 singles. Of the 48 singles she has released, there are 21 in which she is a featured artist and six that were promotional singles. As a solo artist, Rowland has also collaborated with many other well-known artists, such as David Guetta, Alex Gaudino, Tiziano Ferro, and Tiny Tempah. The most successful of these collaborations was ‘When Love Takes Over’ with David Guetta as this became a number-one hit single worldwide.

Throughout her career, Kelly Rowland has also worked in television. Her first major television appearance was in 2007 when she appeared in ‘Clash of the Choirs’. Two years later, she appeared in ‘The Fashion Show’, followed by becoming a judge in the UK version of ‘The X Factor’ in 2011. She reprised her role as a judge in the US version of the talent show in 2013. Other television shows in which she has appeared include ‘Everybody Dances Now’, ‘Chasing Destiny’, ‘Love by the 10th Date’, and ‘American Soul’.
